Island Chick's Hatchery

Island Chicks is located in Whitbourne, Newfoundland, which is approximately one hour west of St. John's. They hatch both broiler and leghorn chicks for the Newfoundland poultry industry. The hatching eggs are trucked weekly from Clarks Chick Hatchery in Burtts Corner, New Brunswick. The eggs come from company owned breeding barns in New Brunswick as well as those imported from the USA.

At the hatchery they are set into the incubators under precise temperature and humidity controls. After 18 days they are transferred to the hatchers where in 3 days time they are ready for processing. During the processing the chicks are separated by sex using a visual inspection of the primary and secondary feathers on the wing tip. From here they go to be vaccinated, counted and placed in boxes ready to be delivered to the producers.
